'Baetylus (also Bethel, or Betyl, from Semitic bet el "house of god") is a word denoting sacred stones that were supposedly endowed with life. According to ancient sources, these objects of worship were meteorites, which were dedicated to the gods or revered as symbols of the gods themselves.[1] A baetyl is also mentioned in the Bible at Bethel in the Book of Genesis in the story of Jacob's Ladder.
